According to the National Registry of Disease Office, breast cancer was the leading cancer diagnosed among females across all ethnic groups in Singapore, and accounts for 29.7% of all cancers diagnosed. It is the most common cancer and the top cause of cancer mortality for women.

All women are at risk of breast cancer, where cancer cells grow in the breast tissue. The chances of developing it increase with age. Having a family history of breast cancer, malignant or benign breast disease, being on hormone replacement therapy, or having had an early onset of menstruation are among some of the risk factors of breast cancer.

While breast cancer can present itself with symptoms such as a persistent lump or thickening in the breast or in the axilla, a change in the size or shape of the breast, bloody discharge from the nipple and more, the early stages of breast cancer can be asymptomatic. This is why regular mammograms are important. It can find breast cancer as early as three times before it can be felt, allowing for early intervention and treatment.
