Hailed as “impeccable players”, the Tana Quartet approaches music of different eras and styles with equal intensity, creating a new tradition that links the past and the future. The Quartet has joined forces with the composer Philip Glass for the Asian premiere of his String Quartet No. 9. This new work, first performed in Belgium in 2021, is based on his earlier score for the Broadway production of King Lear directed by Sam Gold. A stark, dramatic landscape unfolds through Glass’s characteristic repetitive structures, oscillating harmonies and gently swaying rhythms, punctuated by icy textures heralding the monumental storm to come. Almost Schubertian in nature, the quartet is marked by layers of sounds and contrasting timbres and rhythms.
Programme:
Caroline Shaw - String Quartet “Entr’acte”
Philip Glass - String Quartet No.9 “King Lear”
Franz Schubert - String Quartet No.14 “Der Tod und das Mädchen”
The Tana Quartet is:
• Antoine Maisonhaute, founding violinist
• Ivan Lebrun, violinist
• Julie Michael, violist
• Jeanne Maisonhaute, cellist
