Trees have held a special place in human societies throughout the ages. Their importance could not be overstated: they provide food and shelter; medicine and tonics; dyes and timber; warmth, light, and hope in the long cold nights. They were accorded the highest respect and immortalised in ancient lore. They were believed to be gifts from the gods; they were hailed the pillars of creation as World Trees; they were the abodes of divinities. However, the advent of modern society has diminished their lofty status. Trees are often viewed as commodities to be exploited. Vast tracts of forest and jungle have given way to plantations and urban development. In each work, “Leaf & Lore” explores the myths and stories inspired by a specific tree species and highlights the myriad struggles faced by each species in surviving the complications of modern society. Rendered in charcoal, the charred remains of trees, these works are poignant reflections on the sacrifices imposed upon the natural environment in the name of human progress.
