Luantan Ascent first came to prominence as the indie-rock band Luantan with the release of their first album, “Hope,” in 1997. The band went on to win the Best Singing Group award at the Golden Melody Awards in 1998 and 1999.
Lead singer A-xiang eventually moved on to solo work, releasing a popular single, “A Gust of Wind,” and formed his own label, Chockablock records. No longer confined to the mainstream after initial critical success, A-xiang now records as Luantan Ascent, freely combining elements of the traditional Chinese opera form Nankuan with popular folk melodies in his music.
