In Singapore, Cervical cancer ranks as the 10th most common cancer in Singapore, with more than 200 cases diagnosed annually. 99% of the cases are linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV), and the disease begins in the cervix, located at the entrance of the womb. Cervical cancer is largely asymptomatic in its early stages, but some women may experience symptoms including vaginal bleeding after intercourse, irregular bleeding between periods or after menopause, watery and bloody vaginal discharge with foul odour, or pelvic pain during intercourse. Women with multiple sexual partners, a family history of cervical cancer, or those who smoke or rely solely on oral contraceptives are at higher risk of developing cervical cancer.
With regular screening, cervical cancer is a highly preventable cancer. Pre-cancerous abnormalities can be detected through screening tests; HPV vaccinations also provide additional protection against cancer-causing HPV strains.
365 Cancer Prevention Society’s free cervical cancer screening campaign, #My1stPapTest, has returned from now to 15 March 2025. The initiative, now in its second year, kicks off 365CPS’s annual series of seven free cancer and health screenings aimed at empowering eligible individuals to take charge of their health through early detection. #My1stPapTest will benefit women between 25 – 69 years old, who are sexually active or have engaged in sexual intercourse, and hold a valid blue or orange CHAS card or the Public Assistance card. #My1stPapTest utilises the ThinPrep Pap Test, a liquid-based cytology screening method that improves the preservation of cervical cells for analysis. This advanced screening technique improves the detection of abnormal cells and increases the accuracy of results.
