365 Cancer Prevention Society (365CPS) has launched #My1stProstateCheck, the newest addition to its line-up of seven annual free health screenings for lower-income individuals in Singapore. This marks the highest number of free health screenings provided by an organisation in Singapore.

Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer among Singaporean men and accounts for one in six cancer diagnoses. An average of four new cases are diagnosed daily. Through the #My1stProstateCheck campaign, 365CPS, in collaboration with Icon Cancer Centre, aims to raise awareness about prostate cancer in Singapore and highlight the importance of early detection for effective treatment.

From now until 30 November 2024, all Singaporean males aged 50 and above, as well as individuals aged 45 and above with a first-degree family history of prostate cancer, who hold a valid blue or orange CHAS card, are eligible to register for the #My1stProstateCheck screening campaign. Eligible individuals will undergo a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test at 365CPS screening partners’ facilities to determine the amount of PSA protein in their blood. The clinic will schedule a review with the doctor if the test indicates abnormalities and refer patients to a public health setting if further investigation or treatment is needed.

While prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in Singapore and around the world, it is not the deadliest. Many cases are slow-growing and may not require treatment. However, advanced prostate cancer can be fatal. It typically occurs in men over the age of 50 and is mostly seen in those over the age of 70.

In its early stages, prostate cancer often presents no symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, men may have trouble urinating, frequent nighttime urination, blood in the urine or semen, and challenges with walking or controlling bladder or bowel function. The risk of prostate cancer increases with age, and men with a family history of prostate cancer are more likely to get the disease. In Singapore, Chinese men have a higher risk of getting prostate cancer.

"Since launching our first screening campaign in 2021, 365 Cancer Prevention Society has screened over 400 individuals, empowering them with vital health insights to seek early treatment and intervention if needed," said Mr Andrew Soh, Assistant Director of Fundraising, Marketing, and Volunteer Management at 365CPS. “#My1stProstateCheck is the latest addition to our lineup of seven free health screenings in Singapore. It is a crucial step in addressing the health challenges posed by prostate cancer, the most common cancer among men in Singapore while ensuring that individuals from lower-income backgrounds have equal access to these life-saving screenings.”

365CPS dietitian Ms Ng Jing Wen noted, "A diet high in fat, dairy and calcium may elevate the risk of prostate cancer. We encourage adopting a balanced lifestyle and a nutritious diet rich in fruits and vegetables to promote overall well-being and reduce cancer risk."
