Phulkari, meaning ‘flowerwork’, is an embroidery technique from Punjab done with floss silk thread on cotton khadi (coarse handspun, hand-woven fabric) and natural vegetable dyes. Traditionally embroidered with geometric patterns and floral motifs by the women for daily use, the phulkari is an essential element in rites of passages such as birth, death and marriage.
