Speaker's Profile:

Mark McHarg started playing Drums at a young age, having been inspired by his father—an accomplished drummer for various artists during the 60s to the 80s—and played for a local brass band from age 11 to age 16. In 1993, he began studying more contemporary styles of music such as Rock, Funk, Pop and more when he started playing with local groups, although he maintained his passion for Jazz, whether in small group or big band ensembles.

In 2004, Mark began studying the highly-acclaimed Colin Woolway’s Drumsense Programme, having had direct tuition from Woolway himself in 2004-2008 which gave him insight into teaching and music education.

He began working with Rockschool in 2005, and has sent hundreds of students through Rockschool Examinations. He currently teaches at 9 schools across Northamptonshire (UK) and in his own busy home studio.

In 2010, Mark studied under Steve White (Style Council, Paul Weller, Oasis), and also studied and was regularly deputised under Alan Savage (ITV House Band, Des O’Connor, The Jazz Colossus Big Band) on various Jazz & Rock sessions.

He attained a Merit in his Level 6 RSL Licentiate in Music Teaching in 2015, and became an Examiner for Rockschool in March 2016.

More recently in addition to his ongoing commitment with RSL, Mark currently teaches in schools and deputises with the Rutland Big Band Orchestra whilst continuing to study with progressive rock drummer Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson).

Mark is part of the Vic Firth and Istanbul Mehmet Education Team, and an Educational Ambassador for Roland Electronics.
