Antonio Hart, mentor (United States) - alto saxophone

Antonio Hart is a highly sought-after jazz alto saxophonist both in the US as well as abroad. While his love for jazz was evident at an early age, Antonio’s formal study of jazz began at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, he studied with Bill Pierce, Andy McGhee, and Joe Viola. The three teachers gave him the foundation he needed to develop into a professional musician. While at Berklee, Hart also majored in Music Education.

One of the most significant partnerships forged at Berklee was the one with Grammy award-winning jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove. They spent three years touring the world and recording Hargrove's first three records. The latter played on Hart’s first recording, “For the First Time.”

During those first few years on the road, Hart also worked on his Master’s degree at Queens College. There, he had the opportunity to learn from Donald Byrd and the great Jimmy Heath, who subsequently produced Hart’s second recording “Don't You Know I Care.”

Hart’s 1997 release, “Here I Stand” by Impulse Records, earned him a 1997 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Since then, he has recorded eight CDs as a leader, the latest being “Blessings” by Jazz Legacy Productions. He is also in much demand as a guest musician on over 100 recordings.

Hart balances his time as a full-time tenured professor at the Aaron Copland school of Music, Queens College, with traveling on the road with his bands, the Dave Holland Big Band, and the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band.
