- Traditionally Avant-Garde:

Traditionally Avant-Garde is a lecture-concert series where traditional Malay music goes beyond the cultural norms in contemporary music compositions.

In recent years, we see strong influences of one’s heritage and culture reflected in the composer’s musical work. This has impacted the shape of musical compositions where the composers have a great sense of pride in portraying the rich culture and roots.

Traditionally Avant-Garde will bring you through the journey of Malay music. Evoke your senses with the sounds and rhythm of Malay music idioms. Artistic Direction by Zulkifli Mohamed Amin.

- Music Lecture:

This lecture will be presented by Pak Ngah (Datuk Suhaimi Mohd. Zain) and Syafiqah 'Adha Sallehin. Syafiqah will undertake the classical contemporary music approach while Pak Ngah, who is iconic in the Malay music scene will talk about his experiences and his works in popular culture.

Attendees will have a greater understanding of what and how each instrument plays an important role in Malay music composition and its impact on globalization and in the Malay archipelago context. Lecture will be in English and Malay.

- About Pak Ngah:

Pak Ngah is an award-winning composer and producer of Irama Malaysia genre. Famously known for his works for multiple award-winning artists such as Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza and Nuraniza Idris amongst others.

- About Syafiqah 'Adha Sallehin:

Syafiqah ‘Adha Sallehin is a graduate from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) with a Masters in Music. Syafiqah is also a self-taught accordionist in the Malay traditional music genre. She is also the music director of a Malay traditional-contemporary music ensemble, Gendang Akustika.

- Concert:
The concert features works by Singaporean contemporary composers such as Syafiqah ‘Adha Sallehin, Danial Ariffin Azman and Zulkifli Mohamed Amin.

The musical works will demonstrate new approaches in contemporary music composition using Malay music idioms. The performing ensemble, Nusantara, uses a non-traditional medium which expresses the composer’s’ interpretation and experimentation to the genre.
