The Red-Haired Steed (1963, Hong Kong)

Rating to be advised/B&W/Teochew/English and Chinese subtitles/111 min/Post-screening talk in Mandarin by Su Zhangkai
Director: Law Cho (Law Chi)
Cast: Chen Chuhui, Fang Qiaoyu, Mei Zhen, Zhang Yingyan

The prime minister’s daughter sees a flying dragon. She rushes out of her mansion only to find a beggar who resembles the man in her dream. Despite their differences in social status, she falls in love and is determined to be with him at any cost.

Adapted from a well-known folktale, the Red-Haired Steed was first rendered in Peking and Cantonese live operas. Featuring traditional opera stunts such as hair-flinging and horsewhip-cracking, this film is a great introduction to the Teochew cinematic heritage.
