The 2017 Traditional Arts Taster Programme for Pre-schools by National Arts Council introduces Singapore’s traditional art forms to young children aged four to six years old. The programme is in line with the Traditional Arts Plan to develop a broad-based audience and foster an environment appreciative of traditional arts through active engagement of younger audiences.

Following the success of the pilot programme last year, the Traditional Arts Taster Programme for Pre-schools is restaged this year with the addition of a new story Chang Er, Goddess of the Moon. It is a collaborative effort with Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre and Act 3 International, which has extensive experience in curating workshops and drama programmes for young children.

The programme is carried out in the form of a learning journey, where students would experience a 30-min theatrical performance, followed by a workshop session, where students will be organised into smaller groups to learn about the traditional art forms in an immersive and participatory setting.

Chang Er, Goddess of the Moon
Our version of this famous folklore about a goddess in the moon comes alive through a combination of dance, music, and dramatization, synergetically merging text with physicality created from nuances of folkloric Chinese dance movements.
