Inspired by Roger Jenkins’ book of dramatic poems, “From the Belly of the Carp”, which won the 1995 Singapore Literature Prize, Kampong Chempedak is a multilingual play set in the late ‘60s about the heartfelt stories of the residents of the kampong. Their idyllic and peaceful lifestyle is cut short when they are given notices of resettlement, with the play exploring the conflict of emotions as residents ponder their next move, fearful of losing the deep sense of community and familiarity and of what is to come.
