In 1820s, the Yueh Hai Ching Temple, also known as Wak Hai Cheng Bio, was built by the local Teochew community as a sacred reverence to Mazu, the goddess of the sea, who blessed the journey of the countrymen who sailed from Southern China to Singapore. Sitting in the central district of modern Singapore, the temple had witnessed the transformation of Singapore from a fishing village to the metropolitan city as of today.

In order to preserve the original structure and outlook of the century-old monument, the Temple underwent a major restoration project in 2011 which lasted for 3 years. In 2014, the restored Temple won the prestigious UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award, as well as the URA Architectural Heritage Award, in recognition of its prestigious architectural and cultural value.

This year, the Ngee Ann Cultural Centre hosts the Hai Ching Temple Photo Contest, to celebrate these esteemed accolades of this historical landmark as well as the 10anniversaries of Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition.
