An award-winning novelist, writer and playwright, Ovidia Yu's ability to understand human nature and articulate her forthright observations on femininity, gender and the Singapore identity has been critically acclaimed around the world.

A perennial favourite in local restagings, The Woman in a Tree on a Hill explores love, oppression, violence and freedom through the myths and stories of the biblical story of Noah; Nu Wa, the Chinese Goddess of Creation and Marriage; and Singapore heartlanders, Nora and Norman.

Through a surreal conversation between a woman and her dead ex-lover, a startling history is revealed. Hitting (On) Women is a poignant recollection of one woman's past and her subsequent coming to terms with her abusive relationship with a woman named Karen.

An ascerbic and satirical theatrical piece as seen through the lives of different women, Three Fat Virgins redefines the oppressed women as a 'fat virgin', vividly illuminating and dismantling the social stereotypes of Singaporean women.

The plays presented in this reading are selected excerpts from each script.
