Regarded as "one of the most critically lauded and garlanded thespian of his generation", Chong Tze Chien's plays are known for their bold and incisive social and political commentary, as well as for their innovative and multiple narrative dramatic structures. His debut as a playwright, Pan Island Expressway (PIE), won the Singapore Dramatist Award in 1998.

In Charged, a seemingly senseless double death places Investigating Officer Victor de Souza at the centre of an unspeakable racist sentiment. As he attempts to make sense of what happened, news of it spreads, triggering an eruption of racial tension between the Malay and Chinese communities. Charged won Best Script at the 2011 Life! Theatre Awards.

In PIE, a playwright engages actors for his new play. As they go deeper into their roles while filming footage for the play, fiction and reality start to blur. An intense interrogation ensues, leading to a wrongful accusation and the distortion of the truth.

The plays presented in this reading are selected excerpts from each script.
