Swee Leng and her friends are Samsui women. When a devastating fire sweeps through 1960s Bukit Ho Swee leaving thousands homeless, Swee Leng and her Samsui sisters rise to the occasion to help the people rebuild their lost homes. However, many workers on the ground think that the women are too old and weak to help.

Will Swee Leng and the Samsui women be able to prove them wrong or will they give up? Will they be able to race against time to build new homes for the residents of Bukit Ho Swee?

Join the tenacious Samsui women in this theatrical treat especially for children and their families. Samsui Women: One Brick at a Time is a rare glimpse into the lives of the once familiar Samsui women and features an array of different puppetry, creative set designs and a moving story about friendship and never giving up.

Samsui Women: One Brick at a Time is presented by The Finger Players in this special one-day only performance at Esplanade.

“Our young generation is no longer familiar with Samsui women and their stories as they have all but disappeared from our consciousness and construction sites. It would be a great pity if our pioneers are forgotten by succeeding generations. It would be meaningful to remind our children of the role Samsui Women had played in our nation building. To make the staging more interesting, we use an array of puppets and a specially designed interactive set that transports the audience to the old days of Singapore, bringing to life the stories, struggles and the joy these women had experienced in their lifetime. “

- Chong Tze Chien, Company Director of The Finger Players

“The Finger Players has nabbed the coveted Production of the Year award three times following a rebrand of its puppet theatre troupe in 2004, to sold-out runs and a loyal following for its mode of intelligent and inventive object-based theatre.
The group tends to blend strong, sleek production design with strong storytelling, creating images that stay with audience members long after the curtain call.”
