Equator Art Projects is delighted to present PAINTING INDUSTRY, a solo show by one of the best-known Malaysian painters, Jalaini Abu Hassan (Jai). In recent years Jai has become fascinated by images of old factories and has painted many of these vast, cavernous spaces with his trademark bitumen. In them appear a variety of actors and motifs – some enigmatic, some ironic or comic. As always he continues to explore other areas and materials, painting on some of the fabrics he assiduously collects in his travels and, of course, drawing.
Jalaini Abu Hassan (b. 1963, Selangor Malaysia) graduated from Institut Teknologi MARA (now UiTM) with Bachelor of Art in 1985 and continued his education under scholarship awards at the prestigious institutions of The Slade School of Fine Art in London and the Pratt Institute in New York, where he obtained his MA and MFA respectively. To date he had mounted 24 solo exhibitions in various countries, and his works have been included in group exhibitions in Melbourne, Bath, London, Frankfurt, Madrid, Beijing, Fukuoka, Bandung, Manila, and Singapore.
Artist's Talk: Sunday, 22 March, 2-3pm.
Exhibition runs from Sunday, 22 March till Sunday, 19 April
