STRAUSS Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30
HOLST The Planets, Op. 32

Robert Spano, the Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony, makes his SSO debut conducting two sonic spectaculars with extra-terrestrial associations. Strauss's tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra was inspired by Nietzsche's philosophical novel celebrating human power and energy, and the philosophy of the Superman, but it became massively popular after the use of its opening sequence in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Holst's great orchestral suite The Planets demands a huge orchestra which includes an organ, two unusual woodwind instruments (the bass flute and bass oboe) and a female chorus. Its seven movements reflect the astrological characters of the seven planets then known (excluding Earth).
