‘The Enlightened One: Images of Gautama Buddha in Contemporary Art’ is a significant showcase that celebrates an irrefutably powerful anthropomorphic representation of a subject that entails great art historical emphasis and embodies an international reputation for its profound metaphorical and philosophical symbolism. In view of the curatorial trajectory of the exhibition, the artists of this exhibition have attempted to 'feel' the image of Gautama Buddha and attempt to realise what it conveys to him/her, as the artist resonates with the pulse of the image, beyond its historical and religious connotations. In other words, the artists of this exhibition, have been endowed with the creative option of personalising and/or localising the image of the Buddha, within an informed context that is visually-legitimate.'

Curated by Vidhya Gnana Gouresan, ‘The Enlightened One’ features 25 senior and emerging artists from Singapore, Cambodia, India, Sweden and Sri Lanka. The public is welcomed to meet some of these artists at an informal art forum on Saturday, 23 May, from 2pm. Admission is free.
