You see him weaving through the streets, scouring along corridors and honking through car parks. Always on the periphery, he searches and collects unwanted “junk”. But who is the Karung Guni Man? What is his story? What does he do with all the junk?

These bits of junk, to him, are unwanted memorabilia discarded by a community that have their eyes fixed on the future. As they march forward, pieces of memories get left behind; these are objects that tell stories of resilience by individuals, love in a family, determination of a community, and the toil and courage of a nation as it builds a name for itself. These are stories about the people of Singapore.

What is the Karung Guni Man’s story? Perhaps to know his story is to know the stories of the people and what makes them Singaporean.
