International Day of Yoga

In its truest meaning, Yoga means ‘union of the individual with the whole existence’. Recent proposal by Prime Minister of India and subsequent declaration by the United Nations to celebrate 21st June as “International Day of Yoga” has further reinforced the value and profound benefits of Yoga to bring an individual’s mind, body, spirit and existence in absolute harmony. The hectic pace of modern life has brought with it an incredible amount of stress and anxiety. Scientific studies show that daily practice of yoga reduces stress, anxiety and depression; increases health, energy and vitality; enhances mental focus and clarity and establishes a sense of peace, joy and deep inner balance. This, in turn, can create a more peaceful and joyous global community around us.

175 countries including Singapore, USA, Canada and China supported by co-sponsoring this resolution, a rarity in the new world. It had the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA resolution of such nature.

Various government and non-government organizations throughout the world have committed to spread the awareness about yoga and its benefits, to millions of people on first IDY this year. Please visit to find out more.

As an active step towards this vision, Government of India (MEA) invited Sadhguru - founder of Isha Foundation to strategize and plan the celebration of the International Day of Yoga in all the Indian Embassies and Cultural Centers worldwide. As a result of this meeting, Isha Foundation was appointed as a supporting partner to all the Indian Embassies worldwide, by offering free yoga workshops, demonstrations and classes on the day of and the weeks leading to June 21st, 2015.
