LISZT Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, S. 125
SCHUBERT Symphony No. 4 in C minor, D. 417

Liszt initially referred in manuscript to what would become his Concerto No. 2 as a "Concerto Symphonique", drawing upon the concept of symphonic metamorphosis, in which main themes or ideas are developed by soloist and orchestra working as an inextricable entity. The sensational young pianist Benjamin Grosvenor takes on this remarkably poetic work that is both delicate and athletic, forceful yet lyrical. The concert opens with Bartók's spirited Divertimento for String Orchestra, a work that draws upon the textures of the 18th century Concerto Grosso, and closes with Schubert's Fourth Symphony.
