Britain's best-loved pianist Steven Hough takes centrestage in the five definitive Beethoven piano concertos over three exciting performances under Lan Shui. Beethoven's final piano concerto, the Emperor, is noble in character and the most popular among the five, described at its premiere as "one of the composer's most original works". Earlier in his life, it was with No. 2 that Beethoven sought to establish a name for himself with this work after his move to Vienna from Bonn. The concert opens with Hough's own composition, the elegiac Loneliest Wilderness, featuring SSO's Principal Cellist Ng Pei-Sian.
