What are gears
How gears help us to do work
Figuring out how gears work
Invent a working toy that uses gears!
Gear applications can be found in our daily lives, in escalators, vehicles, airplanes, etc. This 2-hour workshop will enable kids to understand how to utilize gears to perform work for us. Thereafter, they will be guided to build working toy models such as cross-bow and lifting mechanism using a versatile and patented construction set Thinkertoyland®.
Besides sharpening their fine-motor skills through the simple inventing process and highly hands-on activities, kids will acquire and apply basic science and engineering knowledge, pay attention to details such as balance, and incorporate features to overcome problems and enhance efficiency. Working in small teams, each kid will also learn invaluable life skills such as teamwork, communication and self-confidence. All these will be gained through the cycle of iteration of quick prototyping, testing and making improvements to their inventions to meet given challenges.
For children 5 to 10 years-old.
