The Cider House Rules is based on John Irving’s novel of the same name. The film follows Homer Wells, an orphan who becomes a skilled but unlicensed physician under the tutelage of orphanage director Dr. Larch, who is secretly an abortionist.
Yearning for a life outside the orphanage, Homer leaves with a couple, Candy Kendall and Wally Worthington, and works on the Worthington apple farm. There, he meets with circumstances and happenings that shape and change his beliefs, leading to his eventual return to the orphanage.
The Cider House Rules was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and went on to win two. Because of time constraints, many parts of the novel were excluded from the film. John Irving, who also wrote the screenplay, has stated that he did not want to write an adaptation that could not do justice to these subplots and characters, so he chose to omit them instead.
