San Po monastery is famous for its Mahayana Sutra scroll, handcopied by the monk Tripitaka of the 7th century. The old abbot calls a meeting to decide his successor. He invites General Wang, a wealthy patron, Wen Ann, and Master Wuwai, who is served by many female followers and eats meat, to the meeting. Wang and Wen both covet for the priceless scroll, and each has his plans. Wen brings a female thief, White Fox, disguised as his concubine. Both parties tried to steal the scroll. The abbot chooses the convict, Qiu Ming, as the new abbot, and conferring Qiu as Master Huiming. Wen and white Fox steal the box of the scroll and get away, but are chased by the General staff, and they have vicious fights. Later Wen falls from the cliff and White Fox decides to become a nun. The new abbot burns the original scroll in public and then gives the copied scroll to the public. All that happens point out what is most important in the classics is the spirit, not the scroll.
