Follow an everyday lad’s instant rise to fame from an amateur photographer in small town Baltimore to the next big thing in New York’s glitzy art scene in this nifty comedy by John Waters, one of the most beloved enfants terribles of American cinema. Pecker – apparently named as such due to his childhood habit of pecking on his food – is an unassuming 18 year old who enjoys the casual hobby of photographing characters in his hometown with his simple rangefinder camera between his work shifts at a sandwich shop. Soon enough, a New York art dealer discovers Pecker’s ‘glamorously’ out-of-focus portraits in a DIY exhibition, and proceeds to groom him into a sensational art phenomenon, a process whereby Pecker finds his idyllic small town life threatened by sudden and instant exposure to fame.

On the outset, Pecker focuses its lens upon the art world, serving up a critique of its pretensions and how it exploits and appropriates its subjects in erroneous ways. However, Waters avoids condemning it as such, but pokes fun at it, effectively showing his love for the art world in all its eccentricities.
