One of the most celebrated and controversial plays of the 21st century will make its Singapore debut in October 2014. Singapore's oldest theatre company, The Stage Club, is delighted to present a cast of fourteen talented actors, directed by Nick Kenny in West End and Broadway sell-out sensation Jerusalem. Jez Butterworth's fantastically entertaining state-of-the-nation piece about an outlaw and the erosion of English country life has enchanted audiences since its debut in 2009.
It is St. George's Day and the annual carnival week in Pewsey, Wiltshire. Johnny "Rooster" Byron, a local wastrel and modern day Pied Piper, is a wanted man. The council officials want to serve him an eviction notice. His campsite near to the fast encroaching town is the last bastion against petty officialdom and working class drudgery. Batons and riot shields are lining up on the "Walcott Road". The wooded kingdom will soon be crushed, but Johnny, who serves alcohol to a motley crew of local youths, is unabashed. Immune even to the frustrations of those that love and advise him, its business as usual!
Imagine if you will "A Midsummer Night's Dream" on steroids brought raucously into a modern day setting. DJs, mobile phones, caravans, stuntmen, colloquial dialogue, Nigerian traffic wardens, booze and a village town hall crisis meeting! Jerusalem is a defiant celebration of freedom, a hymn to folk stories and mystery interlaced with a creeping sense of dread for the near future permeating the air.
The Stage Club is delighted to be the first theatre company to bring this raucously entertaining play, to Singapore.
