*International Premiere*

“It is known that the genius of dance lives in Maria Pagés…Neither the sky nor the earth is the same after Maria Pagés has danced.” - José Saramago (Nobel Prize for Literature)

“Pagés has been called the “Queen of Flamenco”, and watching her perform it’s easy to understand why.” - The Japan Times

The free-spirited gypsy of Georges Bizet's operatic classic, who first appeared in Prosper Mérimée's 19th century novella, has for centuries captured audiences with her radical behaviour and untamed heart. Commanding and compelling, mysterious and tenacious, Carmen is a construct of both men’s imagination who has come to embody desire and transgression.

Taking Bizet’s and Mérimée’s enduring creation as a starting point, María Pagés, “the leading innovator of modern flamenco" (The New York Times), challenges the myth of the femme fatale, tearing down the stereotypes that have for centuries enveloped the true essence of what being a woman means. This is a woman offering a more accurate representation of women, who expresses their realities, leaving out none of the hard truths that sustain them.

Following standing ovations for 2009’s Dunas, Pagés returns to da:ns festival with her company in an international premiere, this time a personal and profound piece about womanhood. Going beyond confronting an iconic character of fiction to explore the complexities of women, I, Carmen throbs and pulsates with the fullness of life through 10 emotionally-charged tableaux set against music inspired by Bizet’s score. This choreographic reflection seeks not only to explore desire as an ethical responsibility, it also vindicates life, pleasure, autonomy, freedom and happiness as fundamental rights belonging to every human being.

Winner of highly coveted dance awards including the National Choreography Award (Spain), National Dance Award (Spain) and Leonid Massine Award (Italy), amongst others, Pagés has for the past two decades evolved flamenco and taken the traditional dance form to new heights with her bold infusion of contemporary movement and music. Today, she is revered worldwide for her powerful articulation of emotion through the body and her “endless arms”, as well as the rich intercultural influences that add to her choreographic brilliance.

Direct from its Spanish premiere, savour this unique chance to see the masterful Pagés at work in her newest creation, setting the stage ablaze once again in a fiery display of flamenco, in all its passionate glory. So don’t be left wishing if only.
