“The amazing team spirit of the dancers and their concentration on delectably diverse formations in sharp light and shade effects twinkled with electronic precision of their movements.”—The Hindu

“Enriched movement with a resonance and energy all its own.”—The Hindu

“Samson’s choreography is clean, crisp and complex… Dancers contain their energy like pressure cookers and work in perfect synchrony.”—Washington Post

Spanda, meaning “vibration”, is symbolic of the energy of life—the life force that originates and resonates from the universe and from our bodies.

In their first ever appearance in Singapore, legendary dancer-choreographer Leela Samson’s much raved about dance ensemble presents some of their most striking group and solo bharatanatyam works, set to live music by prominent vocalists Sriram Parasuram and Anuradha Sriram.

A luminary in the bharatanatyam scene, Leela is celebrated for her unique interpretations on the traditional dance form, particularly her flair for creating works of geometric precision, rhythmic acumen and grace. An innovator at every turn, her choreography has for almost two decades continually broken new ground as well as captured the attention of audiences around the world.

Formed in 1995, Spanda was created with a focus to review the bharatanatyam vocabulary through modern reinterpretation, one of which is the development of group choreography for this predominantly solo dance form.

Disha – A Vision hails a breathtaking synergy of bodies, each a part of a greater system moving together in one consciousness. In the end, no dancer is whole without the others, much like the elements of life.
