We have a special Comedy at Canvas event this 4th of November as some of the best international comedians come down to Canvas – not just one, but three – Brendon Burns, who’s stand-up routine is typified by an aggressive, controversial delivery; Earl Okin and his musical alternative comedy; and Nick Sun’s dark, absurd, fearless, smart yet stupid, tasteless & anarchic comedic style. It’s all here!

We have a very special treat as the one and only multitalented Earl Okin from London comes to Canvas. Not just a comedian, Okin is also a singer-songwriter and musician. Though here for comedy, it is worth mentioning that he was signed to the same company as The Beatles in 1966. However, it was a 1979 tour with Paul McCartney and Wings that really set off his musical career. Okin has performed at New York’s Birdland, The Apollo and other jazz venues, but not forgetting his comic side, also performed at Caroline’s on Broadway. A second career on the “alternative comedy” circuit started when he appeared on The Parkinson Show in 1981 and was then invited by Nigel Planer to perform at The Comic Strip. Today, Okin remains a headline act in the alternative comedy circuit.

Australian stand-up comedian Nick Sun was born into a renowned Himalayan Circus family. 2004 was the year that Nick surged into the comedy scene – not only did he win RAW Comedy, Nick went on that same year to win the “So You Think You’re Funny” competition grand final, part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. More recently, his show “Blood on the Yolks in the Key of Owls” won Director’s Choice at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2006 and in 2009 he won the Sly Comedy Comedy Comedy Comedy Competition. His style has been described as “dark, absurd, fearless, smart yet stupid, tasteless and anarchic. His semi-improvisational stream-of-consciousness style combines confessional anecdotes, philosophical observations, satirical social commentary, gleefully tasteless cheapshots and anti-comedic shock tactics…” Today, Nick is an original and cliché-free comedian like no other in the industry.

Australian cult stand-up comedian Brendon Burns’ career began as a performer alongside Sacha Cohen and Ricky Gervais on the comedy show The Eleven O’Clock Show. Subsequently, he’s appeared as a presenter on the show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, conducted masterclasses in stand-up and even won the top prize “if.comedy” awards at the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Burns is known for his boisterous stage presence and controversial material, as well as an aggressive and confrontational stand-up delivery.
