The acclaimed Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit makes his SSO debut with his wife, Canadian violinist Chantal Juillet, in an evening featuring of popular favourites including the lushly atmospheric Violin Concerto by Erich Korngold, better known to many for his pioneering work as a composer of film music.

The story behind Sergei Diaghilev's ballet Petrushka was inspired by the sawdust puppets commonly found in Russian travelling fairs, and conceived as a thinly-disguised allegory of the oppression of the lower classes. Ravel first wrote the music for the ballet's premiere in 1911, later revising it as a concert suite in 1947.
