Khat, an Arabic term that dictates the manifestation of lines, is represented in the art of Arabic calligraphy that arrived upon the emergence of Islam.

This workshop offers participants greater insights into this beautiful art form through the different visual styles of scripts, which reflect the various exotic cultures and historical evolution of different writings. Participants will also learn about the fundamentals of Khat, as well as the discipline and the mental state of a calligrapher. Using a traditional hand-carved bamboo or reed pen and inkwell, participants will learn how to write in Arabic practice a set of alphabets and words.

Experience the practice of calligraphy in a traditional way and revel in this ancient art form with over 1400 years of heritage.

Faizal Somadi comes with more than 13 years of experience in Roman calligraphy, and started experimenting in Arabic calligraphy in 2002 under the guidance of his former high school teacher. With a background in design and arts, his love for calligraphy drove him to learn from various calligraphy experts in Singapore, Malaysia and Turkey. Today, Faizal continues to hone his skills under the tutelage of his mentors, research, and experimenting with different visual styles.
