Beauty Beyond explores the concept of beauty through two distinct artistic styles and expression. Both artists seek to portray beauty through figurative works in which the subject matter is placed in a flat pictorial space. Whilst Vaikuntam’s works feature the working class from the rural Telangana region and their idiosyncrasies depicted in vibrant and celebratory Indian colours, the hallmark of Shaw’s body of paintings is the stylised portraits of the Babus and the Bibis – Bengali men and women from the upper echelons of Indian society – often accompanied by props and illustrated in a bold and fresh palette, exuding a serene and dreamy appearance.

This juxtaposition of works perfectly captures the dichotomies of beauty in Indian society. Drawing parallels between the existing notions of beauty in India and that of the modern world we live in, this exhibition leaves room for contemplation and reflection on what defines beauty in our contemporary society, above and beyond the outward appearance of icons on glossy magazine covers.
