Last year’s winner of the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay as well as Best Picture, Argo is the dramatisation of the covert rescue of six U.S. diplomats from Tehran during the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis. The film is adapted from CIA operative Tony Mendez’s book The Master of Disguise, and Joshuah Bearman’s 2007 Wired article, How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans From Tehran.
A phony production company is set up, to act as the cover story for operatives to enter Iran. We follow the rescue mission, and see the plan meet with many obstacles along the way, right up to the very last second before the escape.

While the film received widespread acclaim, with seven Academy Award nominations, three wins, and more accolades from other prominent film awards, it was also criticised for its historical inaccuracies. Director Ben Affleck acknowledged that they had taken some dramatic license in their portrayal of events in an effort to create more tension and suspense.
