Akademiska Sångföreningen (The Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki) crosses the globe from Finland to Singapore this March in a tour of Southeast Asia, which marks the grand finale of its 175th birthday celebrations.

Helmed by prominent Finnish conductor Kari Turunen, the choir will present a dizzying range of pieces for male choruses, from classics by Finnish nationalist composers from the Romantic period (Kuula, Madetoja and Sibelius), to contemporary compositions from the North (by Hämeenniemi, Vasks, Rautavaara and others) and the U.S. (by Takatch, Whitacre and Nelson).

Founded in 1838, AkademiskaSångföreningen is one of the oldest choirs in Finland. In 1848, it was the first choir to perform Pacius’Vårt land, which would later become the national anthem of the independent Finnish nation.Even as the choir remains invested in retaining its long-standing traditions, it also regularly commissions new musicand takes on fresh challenges.
