The story of 53A first began when Alvin was introduced to Sara through a mutual friend. Alvin felt an immediate connection with Sara on a musical level, and Sara was wowed by the sheer volume of Alvin’s hair. The rest, as they say, is history. The two started jamming together in the dusty attic of a shop along Haji Lane, the unit number of which became the inspiration for the band’s name – 53A. The duo went on to perform together in the ‘live’ music scene for nearly six years before roping in friends Hidir and Irwan to complete their line-up, when the offer to play regularly at Timbre came up.

Today, 53A is made of four musicians with diverse styles and rich musical backgrounds, and is known for its tantalizing brew of pop and rock with a spoonful of lunacy that puts a unique 53A brand on each and every song the band covers. After many long nights of sweating it out at gigs in their matching Donald Duck undies (that’s another story altogether), 53A has finally decided to let the cat out of the bag with its debut original album “Settle the Kettle”.

Featuring songs written by three of the four band members, the album is a roller coaster ride of upbeat, chilled out and ‘emo’ tunes – a result of the diverse musical influences of each composer: Alvin (John Mayer), Sara (The Beatles) and Hidir (Foo Fighters). Irwan is also madly inspired by Click 5.

Tune in to Alvin and Sara on Power 98FM every Wednesday from 12 - 2pm with DJ Harry Corro on the "Wednesday Brew Crew" show!
