Amish Tripathi‘s historical-fantasy series The Shiva Trilogy has achieved phenomenal success having become India’s best selling literary franchise of all time. Reflecting his passion for history, mythology and philosophy, his novels—The Immortals of Meluha, The Secret of the Nagas, and The Oath of the Vayuputras—give a fictionalised account of how Hindu deity Shiva journeys from warrior man to the legendary Lord of purity and destruction.

India’s favourite fictional story of Shiva has earned Tripathi the ranks of a literary pop star, according to renowned film director, Shekhar Kapur. Hours before the launch of the third instalment, The Oath of the Vayuputras, fans had already been queuing up; some dressed as characters from the series, others sporting tattoos from the book, signalling toward the cultural phenomenon that he single-handedly created.

Yet there is quite a backstory to it all—The Immortals of Meluha almost never made it to print. The former banker, who took six years to finish his first book, brought his manuscript to over 20 publishing houses around India but was rejected by all. Tripathi then took it upon himself to publish, and came up with an unconventional marketing plan that saw him print and distribute the first chapter for free. A film trailer for The Immortals of Meluha was also uploaded on YouTube, a first in the Indian literary world. He used that strategy again for The Secret of the Nagas, and by the time the final instalment came out, an original soundtrack album titled Vayuputras: Soundtrack of the Shiva Trilogy was also released, which featured prominent Indian musicians such as Taufiq Qureshi, Sonu Nigam, Palash Sen, and Bickram Ghosh.

Today, with another book series planned, Amish Tripathi stands as a successful novelist with remarkable acumen in marketing that puts him ahead of the literary game. Last year, he was ranked 85 on Forbes’ Celebrity 100 list. “I have enough story ideas to keep myself busy for the next 20 years,” says the author.

For one evening only, peer into his epic world of mythological heros and ancient prophecies as the famed author shares his inspirations, ideas, and the themes he tackled in his literacy phenomenon.
