Have you wondered what to do when one of your body parts fails or whether the material used to beautify yourself is safe? This activity introduces participants to biomaterials and its applications as well as the role materials scientists play. Plaster of Paris (POP) has long been used as an external support for broken bones. However, the mechanical strength of POP varies widely when mixed with water. This workshop evaluates the properties of the appropriate fraction of POP to water that can withstand the highest load. Your students will get to participate in specimen preparation and testing.
