Keung Chung-ping plays Ah-gau who leaves his wife, So-ching (Nam Hung), and baby in Macau to come to Southeast Asia to join his cousin (Patrick Tse) in search of better employment. A series of fortunate events propel him into high society where, in time, he gives in to greed, falls in love with a tycoon’s daughter, Ming-chu, (Patsy Kar Ling) and even changes his name which erases traces of his former life. In his absence, So-ching suffers in utter poverty. Abandoned by Ah-gau, she journeys to Singapore to look for her "missing" husband.
