Welcome to the Circus Maximus!

The Philharmonic Winds, led by Music Director Dr. Leonard Tan, invites you to experience the Circus Maximus. A massive work scored for an onstage, offstage as well as a marching band, the Asian Premiere of Circus Maximus (Symphony No. 3 for Large Wind Ensemble) promises to blow you away, much like how the 300,000-strong Roman crowd were enthralled in the ancient Circus Maximus. The composer, John Corigliano, has won numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award, an Academy Award and a Pulitzer Prize for his works.

The Philharmonic Winds’ musical tour de force includes a celebration of Richard Wagner’s 200th birth anniversary with a performance of his Huldigungsmarsch for military band in E flat major, WWV 97 (or March of Homage).

Another blockbuster work comes in the form of the world premiere of American composer David Ward Steinman’s new piece, Singapore Sonorama. Commissioned by The Philharmonic Winds as a tribute to Singapore’s multi-racial background, Singapore Sonorama will bring listeners through various parts of Singapore using elements of Chinese, Malay and Indian culture.

Completing the exciting concert lineup are Lament for Wind Orchestra by Korean-Japanese composer Chang Su Koh and Satiric Dances (for A Comedy by Aristophanes) by Norman Dello Joio.

Much like how Corigliano’s Circus Maximus foregrounds today’s entertainment industry, this concert promises to bring you musical entertainment of the highest quality from The Philharmonic Winds. Tickets available from Sistic now!
