Embark on a musical adventure through rustic India.

The train journey within the Indian subcontinent traverses the most extensive rail network in the world and connotes the pulse of India as well as the many lives it sustains. The heartbeat of the nation is symbolised by this nostalgic, rustic vehicle that is perhaps the best way to discover the many lands and myriad cultures of India.

Come on board the Taal Express for a mesmerising musical train ride across its rich landscapes—from the southern region of Tamil Nadu to Punjab in the north—to uncover the beauty and charm of Indian music traditions.

Hear the vibrant pulse of a dholki (percussion instrument) as it accompanies the alluring lavani dance of Maharashtra; the invocatory beats of the tavil (percussion instrument) played during a temple procession in Tamil Nadu; folk melodies performed on the shennai (double reed wind instrument) that will take you to the majestic palaces of Karnataka and Gujarat; the soulful renditions of the sarangi (string instrument) that is usually heard across the vast deserts of Rajasthan; and other folk music of India’s many regions.

First staged at the 2006 Singapore Arts Festival, the Taal Express sets off on yet another epic musical journey in celebration of India’s vibrant arts and cultures. Presented by the Temple of Fine Arts, this production is led by 2011 Young Artist Award recipient, Nawaz Mirajkar, and features a 30-member orchestra comprising local and overseas musicians from India, Malaysia and Singapore.

Ride into India’s heartlands and let your senses come alive to the invigorating rhythms and lilting melodies that unravel along the way.
