The SSO and Principal Guest Conductor Okko Kamu partner cellist Qin Li-Wei for Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1, a masterpiece which combines dizzying virtuosity with passages of melting pathos and beauty. Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra was written after the composer’s move to America in the midst of the Second World War, and its premiere in December 1944 proved to be the greatest triumph of his career. Wrote Sibelius: "En Saga is psychologically one of my most profound works. I could almost say that the whole of my youth is contained within it. It is an expression of a state of mind.”
