The area stretching from the northern banks of the Singapore River to Fort Canning Hill has always been known to be Singapore’s administrative district since the colonial times. However, this area was once known to be a prosperous location under a different but forgotten name: Shuixianmen or Water Fairy Gate. Let the National Museum of Singapore’s researcher, Ng Ching Huei lead you on your journey to discover the roots of Singapore’s first business district, the reasons behind its mysterious name, and how it has evolved over the years.

This public lecture is part of Historia SG 2013, an annual series of public programmes by the National Museum of Singapore to engage both young and old with Singapore’s rich history.

This lecture will be conducted in Mandarin.
