Together, we can create a better Singapore

The Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) is organizing the “Get to know Singapore” competition that would provide a platform for new immigrants to learn more about Singapore, understand its unique culture, encourage social interaction and development of local social networks/building friendships. This is the first time SFCCA is organizing such a large scaled integration campaign with a line-up of various interesting and interactive competitions.

The Federation has recognized the challenges new immigrants face when settling into Singapore, and sees the competition as a platform to educate them on Singapore’s heritage, culture and lifestyle in a fun and interactive way. The competition will present an opportunity for new immigrants to interact with locals and integrate into their new home country.

The competition is divided into 3 rounds where series of games from eight main categories that the SFCCA believes are the pillars of the Singapore spirits – Arts, Celebrities, Shopping, Culture, Food, Streets of Singapore, Icons of Singapore, and History of Singapore – would highlight the friendship and togetherness of the contestants over a span of 8 months. These eight categories serve as the foundation of this competition and is derived from the main concept of the “Tray of Togetherness”, a traditional Chinese symbol for Unity and Prosperity. With the support of People’s Association Integration Council, one part of the competition would be held at the annual Integration Carnival on 18th May 2013 at Sentosa.

“Through the eight categories in this competition, our new immigrants would be able to learn about Singapore’s history, culture and understand local fares and rediscover the rich cultural heritage of our nation.” As Mr Chua Thian Poh, president of the SFCCA speaks about the association’s largest scale knowledge contest ever organized.

The challenges in each round would identify groups that compete at the Finale on 20th October 2013, held at the Auditorium in the premise of the SFCCA, to win attractive prizes.

“Get to know Singapore” competition

The “Get to know Singapore” competition spans across 8 months and is filled with games and events.

Contestants would be required to register in groups of 4 members with at least 1 local Singapore citizen and 1 new citizen to the country (defined as one who has had acquired citizenship or Permanent Residence in the last 20 years). The remaining 2 group members need not be limited to the above criteria and are welcomed to register as part of the team.

Registration will commence on 1st April 2013 and ends by 30th April 2013. Registration is to be done online via the website at The competition’s Facebook Page will also serve as a constant update of news about the competition, with opportunities for visitors of the page to win prizes for themselves as well.

In Round 1, contestants would be required to answer questions from the 8 categories, and complete a written narrative or record a video on how the team got to know each other.

A total of 20 groups from Round 1 will then proceed on to Round 2 which will involve a series of events – PA Integration Carnival, SFCCA Dragon boat/Dumpling Festival, Cook off Relay, a challenge on History at various museums in Singapore and a photography challenge that would capture the icons of Singapore.

The top scoring 8 groups with the best scores will then proceed to the Finals which would be held, live, at the SFCCA Auditorium to compete for the final grand prize. The prize for the winning team will include $5 000 in cash and vouchers while the rest of the teams stand a chance to win attractive prizes too.
