Stravinsky Pulcinella Suite
Glazunov Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 82
Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 ‘Pathétique’
Yoel Levi and Renaud Capuçon join the SSO in another evening of great Russian masterworks, spotlighting the finely-orchestrated Violin Concerto by Glazunov, which remains – along with his ballet scores – one of his best-loved works. Taking its nickname from the Russian word “patetichesky” - a word used to denote passion, sorrow and deep, personal emotion – the Symphony No. 6 remains one of Tchaikovsky’s crowning achievements.
The concert opens with Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, featuring music he composed for Diaghilev’s ballet based upon the adventures of the traditional Neapolitan comic theatre character.
