What does Singaporean food have in common with Western classical music?
Project Laksa seeks to explore the connections between food and music, a combination rarely attempted in the history of classical music, where socio-political events and love are the more common sources of inspiration.

Presented by Singaporean musician Song Ziliang, this concert features an evening of classical music infused with local culinary flavours, featuring a specially commissioned work by award-winning Singaporean composer Chen Zhangyi. Entitled Laksa Cantata, the work finds its idea in Bach’s Coffee Cantata written to popularise coffee. Translated into Singaporean context, Laksa becomes the subject of a squabble between a couple in the build-up to their wedding.

Singers Rebecca Li and Kiat Goh take central roles.

Other works on the menu include Milhaud’s exuberant trio for clarinet and Schnittke’s Suite in Old Style that revives antique art-forms featuring Wu Bing Ling on the violin, Colin Tan with his clarinet and Christine Octaviani at the piano.

This performance is part of Food-O-Philia 2013: Let’s Makanise, a programme by The Arts House that explores our relationship with food through the arts.
