"Old-fashioned!" laughs Wouter Hamel, " I think this could be my way of singing," an unusual statement for someone who sounds so fresh and unconventional. And in some ways, the Dutch jazz/pop singer is right: his amazing ears, technically brilliant voice would have found listeners in any musical decade.

Hamel’s melodies lead to ludicrous routes through diagonally and playful, reminiscent of Elvis Costello climes, on hymn-like echoes of Billy Joel to elegant soul, sung with the ease of a Frank Sinatra, sometimes all at once.

Since winning the prestigious Dutch Jazz Vocal Competition in 2005, his first two albums Hamel and Nobody’s Tune have sent him soaring into stardom not only in his native Netherlands but also throughout Europe, Japan, and Korea.

2012 saw his new release, Lohengrin, the result of a long and winding road full of surprises; not all of them pleasant. Being confronted by the painful breakup of a 9-year relationship and the sudden departure of a long-time collaborator, Hamel faced his challenges head on and emerged stronger and more determined than ever.

The inspiration behind many of the songs is his desire to be honest and to write directly about all of the changes he was going through. Taking a tight band and adding a new collaborator has created a new dimension in Hamel’s music—his cleverly crafted lyrics are now housed in sometimes bombastic, occasionally pompous arrangements, which reveal themselves even more with every listen.

Hamel dug deep, on his own, to create Lohengrin. And he’s struck gold. His vulnerability has turned into his strength, and he has dropped another album full of surprises, without compromise.
