This November, the Japan Foundation presents MAU: J-ASEAN Dance Collaboration, a performance commissioned and produced to mark the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan friendship and co-operation.
Co-produced in Singapore by CultureLink, MAU, meaning ‘to dance’ in Japanese, presents a vibrant kabuki-inspired dance tapestry with colourful threads from traditional Southeast Asian art-forms.
Elements of Kelantanese makyong dance (Malaysia), Mindanao folk dance (Philippines), Balinese traditional dance (Indonesia), kabuki dance (Japan) and liyuan opera (Singapore) are woven together with theatrical techniques and artistic effects derived from kabuki.
MAU will premiere in Jakarta on 9 November and will tour Manila and Kuala Lumpur before ending its ASEAN tour in Singapore.
